That great NYT Book Review article is actually what inspired an adult education seminar I did on this very topic, which caused me to look up the quotes that I listed.

There's a great book about these Jewish "bibliophagous" traditions, Ivan Marcus' Rituals of Childhood: Jewish Acculturation in Medieval Europe (http://www.amazon.com/Rituals-Childhood-Jewish-Acculturation-Medieval/dp/0300076584).

And there was a delightful essay on bibliophagy in general in the New York Times Book Review, Blake Eskin's "Books to Chew on,"(http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/books/review/26eskin.html?scp=2&sq=bibliophagy&st=nyt).There are links there to some great images of edible books for the now annual Festival of the Book on April 1.
