Orthodox factions are slamming a Conversvative movement proposal to create an ethically motivated “justice” hecsher certifying workers rights and safety standards at kosher processing plants, the Forward reports.
In a column in The Jewish Press, R. Gershon Tannenbaum, an ultra-Orthodox rabbi affilliated with the Satmar sect, Hisachdus Horabbonim, denounced the social justice hechsher.
The Hisachdus kol koreh called upon all observant Jews to reject the introduction of any type of tsedek heckscher, something never previously heard of. The Hisachdus views the suggestion as an attempt by those outside the observant community to infiltrate and dilute the existing framework of kashrus certifications.
And
Every kosher food producer must repulse any attempts of introducing such alien impositions. Tolerating such infringement would be a first step in destroying halachic kashrus standards. The kol koreh calls upon kosher food producers as well as kashrus certifiers to maintain vigilance against any effort to pierce protective barriers now in place.
In the Forward article, the Orthodox Union punted:
Rabbi Menachem Genack, head of the largest kosher supervision agency, the Orthodox Union, said his organization is “not taking a position” on the Tsedek Hekhsher. But Genack said he believed that labor issues would be better left to governmental authorities.
Industry newsletter, Kosher Today, ran a story detailing how the Tzedek hechsher was driving a wedge between Orthodox and Conservative counterparts (Friendship of Orthodox and Conservative Rabbi in Tatters Over Kashrus Issues).
Responses span from ‘don’t let Conservative overseers into the processing plants at all’ to ‘it’s the government’s job to worry about worker safety, not ours’.
Is anyone stepping up to support the Tzedek hecscher?
Really, is the halacha all that murky? There’s ample material in the Torah on how Jews should treat employees. There is also some evidence on how Agriprocessors, manufacturers of Aaron’s Best brand, have treated their workers, many of them immigrants.
