From the NY Times – An Online Farmer’s Market

The local food movement has been all about buying seasonal food from nearby farmers. Now, thanks to the Web, it is expanding to include far-away farmers too.

Is there a contradiction here?

I do not understand how “far away” farmers can be local. They’re local to someone but if they’re far away, they’re not local to you!

This is an artisanal food source, perhaps, but it is not a farmer’s market in the local food sense. Small suppliers can find customers worldwide – that’s nice if supporting small businesses (and/or finding yummy treats) is the goal. But buying local means food is fresher and the environmental impact of shipping is lower, while dollars stay within the community. This that ain’t.

I am glad to support small businesses – but we sure ain’t eating local foods if I get Voodoo Doughnuts or Mio Gelato shipped to me. Thank goodness Stumptown will open up a Brooklyn roastery!

Foodzie has changed the heading to read-

“Welcome to Foodzie, a marketplace to discover and buy food from small artisan producers and growers.”

I’m glad they removed “farmer’s market” but I’m still not too happy with “producers & growers” remaining in the headline, it’s a misnomer.

Water made with “Hand-picked quinine from the Peruvian Andes.”

Tea containing Chamomile from Egypt, Rooibos from South Africa, Peppermint from the American Northwest, Ginger from Indonesia, and Lavender from romantic France.

I found two vendors who actually could state they were growing or caring for the source of their product. I would conclude this an expensive artisan food site that simply tried to piggy back local foods.

The local food movement already has localharvest.org. The trendy food movement now has foodzie.
