"You’ve made my job much harder on me by naming them,” said the shochet.

What were their names?

Trust me Josh - while it wouldn't have been appropriate to bring the goats into the actual session space, they were definitely the center of attention.

Thanks Eric - put Shabbat Chanukah on your calendar next year - you gotta be here!

Kudos, Leah.

I got goose bumps, too. What a coup, getting those VIP's from the Orthodox world addressing such a diverse group of concerned Jewish food activists.

I'll be eagerly awaiting reports from later in the conference.

Josh, you don't want to startle an animal before slaughter -- the meat won't taste as good. Not to mention what a loose goat might do in a conference room.

I think it's fascinating that the goat was not considered a "key player" worthy of being present for this preparatory session, notwithstanding the goodwill and thoughtfulness that the author and the other key participants in this event seem to express. To me, that omission reveals volumes about what it means to view animals as commodities created for human domination and consumption rather than sentient beings with whom we are privileged to co-exist.

Avi - The quote about eating meat two times a week is actually Rambam's from the Mishneh Torah. I misquoted the notes I took last night (serious sleep deprivation). I'll try to speak with the mashgiach today and find out a more specific source.

Thanks Rachel - I'll try to post again before Shabbat.

Wow. I get shivers just reading this, Leah, and it's not because I'm an hour-and-change north of y'all in the Massachusetts Berkshires and feeling the winter cold too. *g*

I am so thankful to all of you at Hazon and IFJRC for a) making a space for this conversation to happen and b) sharing the conversation via blog with those of us who aren't able to be at Isabella Freedman this Shabbat.

Do you have a reference for that mishna? I'd love to check it out and see how the gemara addresses it.
