I just saw that on another blog.
And that was in NYC. Incredible.
I have a friend who’s mother worked to get the local supermarket to carry kosher turkeys for thanksgiving. A month later the manager came over and made sure to tell them that he had the kosher turkeys for Christmas. Suffice it to say all the Jews in the community made sure to have turkey that Christmas.
So funny! Our local grocery stores now have a small section of “fresh” kosher meats… which is almost always surrounded by pork products. Do they have NO OTHER PLACE to put pork chops????
Leah, you totally beat me to it. I was gonna post that picture. I actually posted it on my site–www.jeffyosko.blogspot.com–accompanied with a brief analysis of the symbolism of the picture and then a longer telling of the history of Chanukkah and the pork taboo.
that got messed up. just http://www.jeffyosko.blogspot.com
When we moved to a small town in Florida I asked at Thanksgiving in the local grocery store if they had kosher turkey. The clerk was very puzzled, and then got it and said “Oh, you mean them Jewish turkeys!”
They didn’t have them. However they do put kosher hot dogs on sale for every Jewish holiday around here.
Anna - I found it on Gothamist…New Yorkers should definitely know better!
Avi - I used to work at a soup kitchen every Christmas morning (what else did I have to do?) and remember serving up Christmas hams…it would’ve been great to go home to a kosher Christmas turkey!
BabkaNosher - that’s great that the local grocery store in your area is carrying kosher meat…I hope it’s double wrapped!
Good to read your post Jeff :)
Kosher hot dogs - not just for 4th of July any more, huh Karen?
