Zelig baby, shalom!

In case you are interested still, and missed it, I responded at some length to the message-in-a-bottle that you pushed in the direction of Grist.org:

Labelling was one of the key issues in the cloning fight. FDA has refuseed to label these because they say that cloned animals are essentially equivalent to natural animals. Of course, corporations are very keen on preventing labels, because then consumers can choose not to eat them.

We believe that consumers have a fundamental right to know what is in their food, especially when it comes to novel, and potentially harmful food technologies such as cloning, genetic engineering, and foods treated with irradiation.

We are fighting hard for this right to be honored... stay tuned.

Aliza,
In May of 1995, about 200 religious leaders from just about every faith joined in issuing a statment to the U.S. patent office that the patenting of life forms is wrong. Cloning is the most recent example of this growing and disturbing trend. Rabbi David Saperstein at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism was the key Jewish spokesperson. Rabbi Daniel Swartz, now in Scranton PA, did most of the organizing of the Jewish signatories.

I am tracking down the entire list of signatories. In the meantime, Justine Burley and John Harris’ volume of essays, A Companion to Genethics (Blackwell, 2002), contains an essay by Mark Sagoff, a philosophy Professor at the University of Maryland. In this essay, he does a good job of discussing the “Joint Appeal”. The essay is called “Are Genes Inventions?” it is on page 420-431.

I won't eat the crud ! What if the cloned animal has some genetic disorder ? HUGE possibility to taint the food supply with some unyet discovered "mad cow" type disease that won't be discovered until 20 years later. By then it will be to late to reverse the impact on humans.

This has the dead fish smell of large sums of money !

I followed your link to the FDA's website, which stated that the "FDA has concluded that meat and milk from cow, pig, and goat clones and the offspring of any animal clones are as safe as food we eat every day". Ha! It certainly is as safe as the food the FDA approves for us to eat every day! Not safe at all!

thanks for this post! i had heard snippets but wanted to know more about the issue. it's pretty crazy and hopefully somebody/people will get active and cause them to reverse the decision in some amount of time OR we can at least push for mandatory labeling. however, that will proabbly be uphill since federal agencies are not big fans of labeling except in certain cases. do you have anymore info on the religious groups against cloning? anything online? were there jewish groups or clergy involved?
