FDA has refuseed to label these because they say that cloned animals are essentially equivalent to natural animals. Of course, corporations are very keen on preventing labels, because then consumers can choose not to eat them. We believe that consumers have a fundamental right to know what is in their food, especially when it comes to novel, and potentially harmful food technologies such as cloning, genetic engineering, and foods treated with irradiation. Cloning is the most recent example of this growing and disturbing trend. Rabbi David Saperstein at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism was the key Jewish spokesperson. Rabbi Daniel Swartz, now in Scranton PA, did most of the organizing of the Jewish signatories. I am tracking down the entire list of signatories. In the meantime, Justine Burley and John Harris’ volume of essays, A Companion to Genethics (Blackwell, 2002), contains an essay by Mark Sagoff, a philosophy Professor at the University of Maryland. What if the cloned animal has some genetic disorder ? HUGE possibility to taint the food supply with some unyet discovered "mad cow" type disease that won't be discovered until 20 years later. Ha! It certainly is as safe as the food the FDA approves for us to eat every day! Not safe at all!
