I found a web site is Thailand that sells those fish oil pills that take care of the fatty acids. I am not sure that they are safe to eat but I am tempted by the cost. Any suggestion how to have better control over the food safety of my diet supplements?

What a thorough post! I appreciate using the generic Rabbi as a foil for your points. However, I just have to say that I know many vegetarian rabbis.

Your post reads like a classic Shut (a halachic answer to a question). Obviously you've thought this through, researched the sources, brought proofs both legal and ethical. Although I don't agree with your bottom line, it made me think.
kol tuv
"Rebbetzin" Yael
PS what's your Phd in?

I very much appreciate that this article was posted here.

Just a few thoughts:

Suggestions very welcome. If you think I have made the rabbi's statements too weak, please suggest alternatives.

I hope this article will start a respectful dialogue in the Jewish community on "Should Jews Be Vegetarians?"

For more information on Jewish teachings on vegetarianism and related issues, please visit JewishVeg.com/schwartz, where I have over 140 articles and 20 podcasts of my talks and interviews.

To see our movie "A Sacred Duty: Applying Jewish Values to Help Heal the World," please visit ASacredDuty.com. You can also request a complimentary copy of the DVD there. The issues are so critical that we want to have the movie seen as widely as possible, and are giving copies out freely to interested people.
