our congregation has a person who contacts each shiva house at the end and offers to take any leftovers to a local shelter. people love this - it makes them feel like the food isn't going to waste...

In our locale, the local homeless shelter is always happy to get donations of food. YMMV, of course.

It's also something for "doer-type" people who want to help and don't know what else to do -- make up a nice box and run it over to the shelter.

Tamar,
I just buried my 98-year-old grandpa today (who I wrote about in an earlier post), and came home to find yours. I am so sorry for your loss; your second to last paragraph really resonated for me, as I felt exactly the same way when I lost my mom six years ago, also to breast cancer. I know it's cliched, but time does help. It will get easier, but you will never stop missing her. I still hope to meet you some day.
