Kosher Olympics – Very Hungry?

olympic1.png

The JTA reported that one of the kosher restaurants in Beijing shechted (kosher slaughtered) 7 1/2 tons of beef and 9 tons of chicken in preparation for the kosher Olympics. They also plan to fly in five rabbinical supervisors specifically for the event.

Jokes about Jewish grandmothers being over-prepared aside, just how many Jews can possibly be going to the Olympics?

What I found interesting is that the restaurant cited a need by the Israeli athletes for kosher food. Except that the majority of the athletes aren’t religious, and most likely aren’t shomer kashrut. Maybe it’s a publicity stunt?

It can only help fuel the need for more kosher venues, food and products. The more the merrier in my book. I prefer to think of the Israeli athletes or whomever eating kosher than dining on whatever treif they can find. Looks so much better for all of us.

I am not too sure if ALL of this is for the Olympics. From what I have heard, Chabad in China organizes an annual kosher slaughter so that they can provide kosher meat in the country year round. I know people who have been asked to volunteer to help out when it has occurred in the past, since they slaughter enough animals to last an entire year. I have a feeling that they are just raising the number for this year, but the meat will be used year round by the Jews in China.

Is there a schectering competition in the kosher Olympics this year?? How fast were these slaughters; any records set?

Hilarious. I agree with feygele that it’s likely a publicity stunt, but also need to point out that food in Beijing is not, with notable exceptions, up to western standards. Even if the atheletes are not shomer shabbos or kosher, I’d rather see them eating kosher food there than risk mistakenly getting boiled brisket of dog.
