on our first date, my husband ordered a veggie burger (i'm a vegetarian and he wasn't), and then a few dates later, he made me veggie stir-fry and even bought soy milk. it was very cute, though it set a bad standard for when he ate burgers in front of me and i was like "what?". now he's a meal opportunist, who eats veggie at home and eats meat out if it looks fancy.

in repayment, i woo him with groceries and vegan cookies.

Like I said, this is from the book "Hot Sour Salty Sweet." I've simplified the recipe somewhat. I like to use Haitian mangoes, if I can find them.

Smoked trout/mango salad

4 mangoes
2 packs smoked trout
1 cup cilantro
chop mangoes, fish, and cilantro. Mix in bowl.

Dressing:
4 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons fish sauce
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons garlic
2 tablespoons shallots
ginger and lemon zest to taste (or galangal, which I can never find)

combine dressing ingredients. Just before serving, mix with salad.

Made my husband a big roasted chicken for our first date and he never left. I also used to woo him with thermoses filled with hand-pulled espresso. I also learned to make Buche de Noel him, ahh...inter-faith marriage.

For me, he's made me a beehive birthday cake, but there's just been so many amazing food moments in our relationship!!

I had met my now-husband at a series of UWS Jewish events, and had finally been able to invite him for Shabbat lunch. I was nervous and didn't want to see like I was going overboard, but also wanted to add a dish that was impressive. So I made my Mango-Smoked Trout Salad (from "Hot Sour Salty Sweet"). I didn't know that mangoes and smoked trout were two of his favorite foods, and he didn't know that he would love them together in one dish! We started dating that afternoon.

I am very lucky to have found another adventurous eater...

Wow - 15 pies? I would've said yes, too! :-)

My wife also just reminded me about this, a recipe that Glamour Magazine runs from time to time called, "Engagement Chicken." Who knew?

I think a blog about romantic food gestures sounds like a good idea. What would it be called?

"Indigesture.com?" "Throughthestomach.com?" "You-had-me-at-jello.com?" "Del.icio.us?" Oh, wait, that last one's taken...

Great question. :) I actually feel like this question deserves its own blog - though maybe it already exists?

My fiance proposed to me with key lime pie. We'd gone with some friends to this key lime pie place in Brooklyn (the owner is from Florida - and that's all they make) and both loved it.

One day I got a text message to meet him down at the store - it was a beautiful day, so I just thought that he'd spontaneously decided to go down there. When I arrived, I saw that he'd purchased 15 of their little 2-inch pies and written "Will you marry me?" in frosting on them. Of course I said yes... it turns out eating key lime pie is a very good thing to do after one gets engaged!

I made my husband a large tin of homemade marzipan fruit and brought it to him in Israel before we officially started dating. 6 weeks later we were engaged.
