Molly the Cow

molly

In case you hadn’t heard, Molly the cow, destined to die at a  Slaughterhouse in Queens, broke through a fence and fled for a mile through city streets while being pursued by slaughterhouse employees.   Was she returned to the slaughterhouse? No!  See here. She has been adopted by some organic farmers in Calverton, Long Island.  We all get it, right? Shabbat Shalom, Molly!

All right, that’s it. I’m becoming a vegetarian.
Talk about hashgacha pratis for Molly!

Everything I’ve seen says Molly escaped from a halal slaughterhouse, not a kosher one. Can you please confirm that it was a kosher slaughterhouse?

Rachel, you’re not alone. :) Rumor (http://tinyurl.com/d6vv59) has it that Barbara Walters was inspired to go vegetarian by this story and that she’s planning on bringing veggie burgers with her on her upcoming trip to the White House. (I would think that the White House could accommodate a vegetarian pretty easily, but that’s another discussion.)

    Hi Michael -
When I first picked up this story yesterday the slaughter house was described as “Kosher” noting that Molly was about to be “subject to the traditional ritual slaughter.” Of course, that online new source could have confused the issue. I am searching and can’t find the original reference, and the articles posted don’t say. I am going to just edit that out of the piece until we know for sure. Does anyone else know? Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and the great Barbara Walters link. Susan

I wanted to let everyone know that I now have two sources who are calling it a halal slaughterhouse and one old post that references a kosher slaughterhouse. I’m going with kalal.
Also, did you know that there is another cow named Molly who also escaped her fate at a slaughterhouse?
