Move Over Rose Garden, Make Room for the Vegetable Garden

First Lady Speaking at USDA

For those of you who signed a petition requesting that President Obama grow an organic vegetable garden on the White House Lawn, according to this article in today’s New York Times, it worked. Actually, petition or no petition, it just so happens that Michelle Obama is a proponent of eating non-processed, local food. She claims that all family members will be expected to do their share of weeding, including the president. Local school children are helping to install the garden, at a cost of $200.

The article lists numerous lettuces and leafy greens that will grow in the garden, but no beets; the president doesn’t like them. I am disappointed to hear that, but arugula will definitely make an appearance. Hopefully, it will now only be a matter of time before we see photos of the Obama family pulling weeds, yes, but more importantly, harvesting food they will enjoy later that evening.

This is really cool. Hopefully it will help to spread the word about local gardening. Most people in the US have some room they can spare for organic tomatoes or lettuce. Actually, lettuce can be quite pretty and i’ve seen some very professional gardens that incorporate lettuce and other vegetables into their gardens. thanks!

Thanks for posting about this, Alix.

What do other people think about the beet question? (Obama’s taken quite a beating on his dislike of beets…)

I’m inclined to think he should plant whatever he likes in his own garden, as long as its not industrial feedcorn (which would rather defeat the purpose)…
