2007, the year ahead in food

The government will be on your plate, says the NYTimes — but in a good way, mostly.

Senator Charles Shumer says he will reintroduce the Safe Food Act in the wake of last year’s E. coli scare. The bill, languishing in committee under the GOP since 2004, “would create a single food safety agency, streamlining a system so bifurcated that the Department of Agriculture inspects frozen meat pizza while the Food and Drug Administration inspects cheese pizza.”

And on the scary side, “last week, the F.D.A. moved a step closer to allowing the sale of meat and milk from cloned animals.”
