[...] Related to thoughts about fruit platters, wedding foods, and such, jspot.org recently highlighted a program in Washington DC called Ethical Smahot. Ethical Smahot is a project initiated by Rabbi Alana Suskin and Rabbi Joshua Ginsberg as an attempt to control the excesses of some Jewish lifecycle celebrations and infuse them with an ethical, meaningful spirit. The project took inspiration from an earlier statement by some Orthodox rabbis in New York City regarding the necessity to control conspicuous consumption during lifecycle celebrations.
I hae been thinking about the very same thing regarding our congregation of 700 families. Ofcourse, not everyone is in shul at any given shabbat kiddush/lunch, but we do serve 400 every week, and what a difference we could make if we make some choices about what to serve when! This is an important issue to be struggling with - how to practice mindful seasonal eating in everyday life, in the life of a huge synagogue with large purchasing power. Thanks for bringing this up, Anna.

similarly (or perhaps not so similarly) at work we were talking about the need for potassium to stave off foot cramps, and how potassium = banana to almost everyone. but certainly bananas must not be the sole captain of potassium, or pre-global-food everyone would have foot cramps but tropical folks (who are already lucky enough). so we started looking up potassium-rich foods and found that TONS of things have it, from avocados to winter squash!

so as synagogues could shift the fruit expectation, high school sports coaches could shift the potassium knowledge. :)
