Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Reducing Comes First

Shaker Museum 01

At Otto Petersen Elementary Schoolin Scappoose, Oregon, the fourth and sixth graders held a “Waste War” in February to see who could have the least amount of food waste.

Here are four ways Otto Petersen students learned to minimize food waste and other waste:

1. Compost food scraps in a worm bin or compost bin.

2. Label garbage cans food to compost, paper and plastic to recycle, and garbage to throw out.

3. Think about what you buy and if you really need it.

4. Before you throw something away, think about ways to reuse it.

  1. Shmethicist Says:

I just spent the weekend visiting a friend who lives in Scappoose. She, and many of her neighbors, have goats. So there’s an even better way for the Scappooseniks to get rid of waste. Feed to the goats.

Or just leave near the goats. They will take it upon themselves to consume anything they find.

  2. Yael Says:

    Hi,
I don’t have a yard so I have no opportunity to compost but we give most of our fruits and veggie waste to the person who organizes the chug chayot (animals club) at my kids daycare and they feed it to the rabbits etc.
