I do have an interest in bees and I'm well aware of the precarious situation most of our bee populations are in right now. I would also like to see that movie at some point. Thanks for the link.

Hi, Uriel - yes, a lot of people (Rashi included!) say that it's date or fig honey, and others say the milk is almond milk. But the teaching I found about the bee not being kosher suggests that at least some people did understand the honey to be from bees - and I found this interesting link:

By the way - if you have any interest in bees, there is a movie called The Vanishing of the Bees which we all need to know about - I saw it at the Hazon conference. Here's the link - if you want to spread the word, it's a truly worthwhile (and urgent) movie:

Deborah- Very nice piece. I like how you find an intersection of food and the Torah portion. I'm just wondering... isn't the traditional understanding of the word "honey" in the phrase "Land of milk and honey," date honey or fig honey, and not bee honey? And isn't there a traditional opinion that the milk is almond milk?

You seem to have done some research, so I'm curious if anything was mentioned about that.
