Sustainable (And Tasty) Jewish Smackdown

img_12911

Coming back from a bit of a blogging hiatus, I have recently discovered what seems like an explosion in a new type of foodie event:

The cooking/eating competition for a particular food item. Case in point:

Last summer, I organized a CSA-themed Team competition loosely based on an amalgam of Top Chef and Iron Chef, for the Moishe House Boston: Kavod Jewish Social Justice House. This summer, as part of our campaign to encourage support for local agriculture among the broader Jewish community in Boston, we may replicate the event, or create a series of spinoffs that could focus on particular seasonal ingredients or specialties.

Maybe, just maybe, we could find a traditional Jewish foods that features seasonal ingredients, and create a sustainable, local, cooking competition based around this traditional food.

Has anyone done this before? Suggestions are welcomed! If we adopt your idea, we’ll offer you an automatic spot as a judge (if you are in Boston, or if not, some other form of recognition ala…”first annual Chaim Yankel Pickle-Off”)

    Latke Lockdown?

I know of a group that has had Russian food-making contests: A borscht contest and a vinaigrette (salad) contest. Not strictly Jewish foods – but very veg-friendly.

The Hazon Food Conference planning committee has a long list of Do-it -yourself tracks they’d like to offer during the 2009 FC including:

    pickling your own herring
    beer brewing
    kombucha making
    pastrami curing

and much much more – and last year around this time Leah Koenig won an award for her blintzes, which were indeed yum.

Ethnic food festivals are definitely a nation-wide phenomenon. CNN just published this article with lists of rather different (and hugely traif) food events from around the country… (and check out the picture of the kid eating the scorpion. yuck!)

I guess I didn’t clearly indicate that we would want the focus to be on CSA ingredients (but some Jewish food that incorporates that)- so think that would include kugel and latkes, borscht (later in the season). keep the ideas coming!
