Fava beans should never be eaten raw as they may produce a dangerous and sometimes fatal condition called favism,a type of genetic anemia.

I'll have to try this recipe- all the times I've tried favas have been dismal failures- except for the fava felafel, which was pretty good.

Kerr- can you recommend a good mung recipe? My family says they taste like dirt.

Fresh favas with artichoke hearts and almonds in a lemony sauce are divine. Claudia Roden has a good version in "The New Book of Middle Eastern food". Mmm.

I did this with only one bag of favas, and I chopped the leeks finer so I wouldn't have to puree it. I like my soups chunky! And it was delicious. I added a little cumin and red pepper to brighten it up a little.

Favas are still not my favorite bean to cook with, because who can resist the ease of lentils or of mung? But I like how silky the inside of their pods are, and the soup was worth the work.
