This lovely post on how food connects us all made me want to discover if there were any traditional foods associated with Samhain/Halloween/the Celtic New Year. Turns out there are a few - apples and nuts of course - but also barmbrack (a raisin cake), colcannon (kale, leek, mashed potato mix) and boxty (potato) pancakes.

And while its ancient origins may indeed be pagan, there is little left of that tradition in the American celebration of this harvest festival today

I'm attending a beautiful festival with some friends that says otherwise, acknowledging ancestors that we have lost and blessing the earth. I may be a Jew, and Samhain, or Halloween, may be still in some circles a pagan (earth-based and nature-honoring) festival, but there's absolutely no reason I can't participate.

Think about handing out fair-trade Halloween candy this year. http://www.fairtradefederation.org/ht/display/EventDetails/i/8392
