The Sweet Taste of Judeo-Kitch

Very Sweet ZionismThe newest thing in Jewish education? A cup of coffee with two teaspoon of Zionism. The Israeli sugar company Sugat has come out with single serving bags of sugar that sport pictures of “The Fathers of Zionism” important Zionist thinkers and early statesmen. In a somewhat repetative fashion, the package promises that they are, compact, easy to use, elegant, infomative and educational. When Theodor Herzl prophesized a futuristic, normalized Jewish state, it is hard to believe he imagined the marketing possibilities of ideological sugar packs.

The sepia toned package evokes the pre-state era when being nationalistic was more black and white. Each package offers you the opportunity to reconnect with Zionist greats. In my pack of 50 there are well known figures like thinkers Ahad Haam and Berl Katznelson, poet Chayim Nachman Bialik, Israel’s first Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, statesman Arthur Balfour . The term “Fathers of Zionism” is apt; though there were many women involved in the founding of the state I found none of them in my box, though I found evidence on the web that at least Henrietta Szold made the cut. The little bio on the back of each pack is only helpful for those who know Hebrew and have a deep familiarity with the history of Zionism. Having read the packs I had to google Alexander Zaid and still don’t know who Eliyahu David Badash is (let me know if you do!) That having been said, I will be looking to buy a few more packs to give as gifts for those who have a passion for Zionism or Judeo-kitch.

I remember those! They were a feature at my favorite coffee shop near Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. Can you purchase them for home use?

I found these a my local MEGA supermarket in Jerusalem (Hadar Shopping Center). Not sure how widely available they are. Happy hunting.
