One way Mayor Adams can support sustainable agriculture is to create permanent sites for all the city's farmer's markets, including a permanent year-round covered site. Currently there is no guarantee than any of our farmer's markets can remain in their present locations long-term; each market negotiates the use of its space with either a private business (like the Hollywood Market does with Grocery Outlet), or a public entity like Portland State University or Wilson High School. Having a guarantee that our markets can stay where they are insures our local farmers have a place to sell their food.

Many of the laws and regulations that pertain to food are determined at the state or federal level and there isn't much of a role for city government there, but safeguarding our markets is something significant that the city can do without needing oversight or permission from the state.

Excellent review of the Salatin 'style' and message.
Joel's message in the evening was consistent as he helped Tyler Jones deliver '[product' to the Urban Farmer Restaurant at The Nines Hotel; his 'sit around' and his conversation with customers at The Urban Farm Store prior to the presentation at the Friendship Masonic Lodge.
The next day he had an interesting visit to the Whole Foods Oregon Tigard Bridgeport where he was provided a tour of the 'local' products they carry and entered into a conversation with numerous store customers about what is and is not organic. The chalk drawing that artist Patrick created to publicize Joel's visit was appreciated. Whole Foods is disassembling the drawing and will ship it off to Joel!
On Saturday he held court from 9:00 - 5:30 pm at Afton Field Farm in Corvallis (www.AftonFieldFarm.com) before 200 people from seven states. Needless to say the 'fire hose' was running a full volume all day long.
The only question in my mind is how Mayor Sam Adams will take Joel's advice about how a City and its elected leaders can support sustainable agriculture.
Perhaps the Mayor who informed Joel that he raised chickens at his home and then shared two lovely zucchini will him will draw inspiration from the copy of "Everything I Want to Do is Illegal" that Joel presented him.
ONWARD!
