Thou Shalt Compost, Or Pay Big Fines

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has just announced the nation’s strictest composting laws. S.F. residents: Either start separating out your compost, or pay a fine. This follows San Francisco becoming the first city in the nation to ban grocery stores from using plastic bags.
While we are losing out to states like Iowa and New Hampshire on our support of gay marriage, at least we’re still leading the nation in something.

As a composter in San Francisco I’m excited to see the city becoming even greener!

Seattle’s on the way! They tried to ban plastic bags in January (or I think they still have them but it’s 5cents each or something like that), but someone appealed and so the hearing’s been postponed till next month… all styrofoam has been replaced with recyclable containers though. They bumped up everyone’s garbage costs and made composting mandatory as well.

We started composting last summer here in SoCal. It’s easy and I feel like I’m having an impact, albeit small. And since we started a veggie garden in the backyard, we’re improving our own soil. Newsom’s running for Governor. Could he win?

Bobbi, I’ve heard Newsom doesn’t have a chance, mostly because of his proud support for gay marriage.
