Welcoming in Rosh Hashana…
…The Jew & The Carrot style!
The holiday of Rosh Hashana (and the month of Elul leading up to it), is a time for shedding your spiritual and relationship baggage. It’s a time to open up to new possibilities and be grateful for everything you have. A time to let the blasts of the shofar shake you awake. More than anything, Rosh Hashana gives us the opportunity for tshuva - to return to our best, most full selves. As we turn inward this month, we have the chance to ask, what impact do we want to have on our communities?
In honor of the coming holiday, The Jew & The Carrot created two great resources for Rosh Hashana.
- Rosh Hashana menu A delicious menu filled with vibrant, seasonal recipes for your holiday table. (Try heirloom baked apples with candied walnuts!)
- Resource page filled with ideas to add a healthy, sustainable twist to your holiday. (Pure maple syrup on your apples? That’s just the beginning…)
Keep an eye out for even more recipes from The Jew & the Carrot blogger and chef, Linda Lantos. And look out in the days before Rosh Hashana for an exclusive interview with award-winning cookbook author, Joan Nathan!

And the timing couldn’t have been better. :-) I’m hard at work planning the second annual Rosh Hashanah Vegan Jewish-Foods Mega-Potluck (here’s the first: http://heebnvegan.blogspot.com.....tluck.html)

Another honey alternative is agave nectar. Sweet Cactus Farms (www.sweetcactusfarms.com) makes premium organic agave nectar certified kosher by Earth-K (www.earthkosher.com), one of the very few kosher certification agencies with health, environmental, animal compassion, and labor standards. Agave nectar has a low glycemic index and is suitable for those with diabetes in moderation.

August 29th, 2007 at 10:09 amHey Michael - I’d love to cross post your vegan potluck on The Jew & The Carrot. Keep me posted!
Shmuel, you know we wouldn’t create a “healthy/sustainable Rosh Hashana” resource page without mentioning your maple :)
Stephen - thanks for the info about agave - I didn’t know it was suitable for people with diabetes.
Hilary - if you have a great recipe for honey cake, email tips@jcarrot.org. We’d be happy to include it in our recipe section!

September 10th, 2007 at 11:33 pmHi Cindy - I certainly wasn’t intending to create any “disasters” with this menu :)
You should check out Enlitened Kosher Cooking by Nechama Cohen - it’s a Jewish cookbook created by a woman with diabetes. The Jew & The Carrot is planning a review in the near future.
