I just ran into this recipe, and I wanted to make a suggestion. Add a bag of fresh cranberries to the recipe. Yumm!

Sue -- even with tart apples, the dough is on the sweet side. For peaches, I'd definitely cut the sugar back to 3/4 Cup, at the most. Let me know how it goes!

thanks for the great ideas with apples. I, however have a ton of peaches and so am planning on using the recipe with peaches instead of apples and see what happens!
I'll let you know.

More advice: I have given up on bagged apples. I'm happy with the smaller size, but the quality is consistently poor. Thanks for the recipe, and thanks for the "wasting food" reference. I grew up with the value but not the (in today's vocabulary) link.

Thanks for the suggestion; I will look for Greenings and/or Baldwins at my local farmstand. And you are absolutely right that the quality of Grannies has declined significantly in recent years. I suppose that the fact that I continue to buy them just proves how strong is the pull of nostalgia. Thanks again!

I applaud your initiative, but the real problem here is that commercial Granny Smiths are only fit for baking. The first of the fall apples are already popping up at local farmer's markets. If you can find a Rhode Island Greening or a Baldwin, fantastic - but almost anything on offer will produce a superior pie or apple kugel to a bag full of mushy Granny Smiths.

Having just walked down your college's main thoroughfare, I can better relate to this tale. I'm going to try the kugel, too. Hope it gets an A+!
