I was delighted to find your lovely story and the great recipe. I am simmering my version right now. The French version I learned from a neighbor uses chicken broth instead of water and being a believer in the healthful qualities of bone broths, I make quantities of broth from different kinds of bones and am always looking for ways to serve a soup to start the meal, to aid digestion and assimilation. (www.westonaprice.org/foodfeatures/brothisbeautiful.html)
Now I have your both your recipe and story to share. Thanks so much,
Laura

Thanks for the story and recipe! My grandparents (from Russia) made schav and they did put it in the blender. I've been trying to duplicate the recipe. This sounds closest to what I remember. I'm eager to try it out.

What a great story! My grandmother used to make schav on Mondays - for the week. Of course, she didn't purée - but rather, left the 'sour grass' (sorrel) in little pieces. Also, she would cut a lemon in half and squeeze it over - maybe two teaspoons. Thank you! Thank you! It brings back so many memories!

The CIA is in St Helena not Sonoma. The building is called Greystone. It was built in the i8oos as a wine co-op. Once ouwned by the Christian Brothers it passed through several hands before it was bought by the CIA. Along with the sale went
Borther Timonthy's cork screw collection which is on display on the first floor. I also houses the
Wine Spectator's Restuarant.

I have always loved, loved, loved, schav. Except for my parents and grandparents, the rest of my family wrinkled up their noses at the stuff. The green glop on the supermarket shelves is a poor substitute for what bubbe used to make in the hot summer months. There are numerous recipes out there and, I've discovered, the fewer ingredients, the better the schav. Water, sorrel, salt, maybe a little lemon juice (keeps it nice and green), a few boiled red potatoes and a dollop of sour cream on top is all I need. Yummy!

Aaron, this was a lovely post. I'd never heard of schav. Glad you remedied that situation, since I love sorrel and simple soups with greens and eggs and dairy fat.

Thanks for sharing this! I'm always looking for good sorrel recipes. My CSA often gives us tons of it.
